This poem is from GOLDENROD. I don’t have any answers. I want common sense gun laws. I want our children to be more valuable to us as a nation than our weapons. I want my children to go to school without fear. I want them to grow old.
rarely feel as helpless as a parent as when I read about school shootings and realize that we're never going to take any meaningful steps to curb guns and it's just some twisted lottery in terms of when it's going to hit your town

Seems unwise, Vania, but you do you. I love this artist's work. So many of the titles make me want to write a poem.

"I love my son *and* I am not at peace with the sacrifice I was required to make." Merritt Tierce rejects "our reductive and linear frameworks" and instead acknowledges the co-existence of difficult truths, of love AND loss. Read this extraordinary essay: nytimes.com/2021/12/02/magaz…

I worked on a lot of poetry pieces this year. Reviews, interviews, reporting. Both radio and web. I'm grateful for @npr. I'm grateful to Petra, my forever editor. Most importantly, I'm grateful to the poets. So as you wrap up 2021, may I suggest you pick up these books? A thread:

Once upon a time, becoming a teenager was when you were handed a Walkman and a tube of Clearasil, patted firmly and awkwardly on the back, and sent forth in the horrors of the next few years.

My daughter turns 13 in a couple of weeks. I am not sure how to mark this transition without these talismans.

one of my pet peeves is the belief that a poem is just a more complicated way of saying something you could say plainly. no. at its best, every line of a poem is actually the simplest way you could say something—it’s just that the something is complicated & strange & alive.
